Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.
The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.
Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.
Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.
The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.

I highly recommend Hotel Berti for its fantastic location, welcoming atmosphere, and exceptional service.

This is a religious tourist city.
This is a religious tourist city. It is more relaxed and the sights afford you a chance to reflect on ancient Italy and what it meant in medieval times. Yes, there are a lot of souvenir shops but they focus on the deeds and good works of St. Francis. It's a good two day visit.

The quintessential Italian village experience!
The quintessential Italian village experience! Yes, it is popular with tourists… but so is Rom and so is most of Italy. The nice things about Assisi is it has many restaurants and historical and religious and scenic sites to enjoy, and when the day trippers go home in the afternoon, you have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of a quiet authentic Italian village in the evenings and mornings before and after the crowds have left. It’s a truly wonderful experience that should not be missed.

Assisi is part of the history of not only Italy, but also of Christian Europe. Suffice it to say that Francis of Assisi, the holy monk, founder of the mendicant order named after him - the Franciscan Order - lived, served and was buried here.
The city has many architectural monuments: Municipal Square, Basilica of St. Francis, Cathedral of St. Rufino, Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, etc. The medieval narrow streets leave a fabulous impression. Excellent cuisine, local quality wines and most importantly, very helpful city residents

I loved Assisi.
I loved Assisi. A very attractive town (the old part) with clean and neat streets and houses. The Cathedral of St Francis is magnificent--a must see place. The main attractions are all within walking distance of each other. A great choice of restaurants.

We drove and it was uphill all the way on narrow roads.
We drove and it was uphill all the way on narrow roads. We had to dodge pedestrians on some of the roads. Basillica was worth seeing and if you had lodging at the top then it was an easy walk to the basillica. One night is all you need to see Assisi.
My room was clean, bright, and comfortable and I was always happy to come back to the hotel at the end of the day. The host and staff are kind and thoughtful. I also loved that I was located in Santa Maria degli Angeli near the Basilica and in a neighborhood that had some tourists, but was more calm and filled with fantastic restaurants. I preferred being there and then easily walking or taking the bus (which comes every 20 minutes) up to Assisi. And the breakfast was lovely.
The staff were welcoming and helpful and gave us a whole container of UHT milk when a little milk for our tea was requested. The location was very central but Assisi is not a large village :) Superb breakfast with a lot of choice. There was a very nice courtyard restaurant, (separate from the hotel) opposite the hotel entrance, who made a reasonably priced plate of tomato bruschetta when asked if they had it when it was not actually on the printed menu..
This hotel has the best location in Assisi, close to EVERYTHING. We stayed for 3 nights with 2 small kids and it was the perfect amount of time to relax and see everything we wanted. The owners went out of their way to be of help, booking dinner reservations etc. Incredibly nice and made our stay so pleasant. We have a car and parking was also easier than we thought, being in this location.
The best flat I have stayed in sofar in Italy. Spacious, very very clean ( like... Seriously) everything great to the last detail of fresh flowers on the table. Very kind host, convenient parking in their villa close by. Can only reccomend! Ps- nothing you expect in Italy - nothing was broken, no mold in shower no strange oil on pans - more what you would expect in a german 4 Star ;)
We had a wonderful stay here. The accommodations were some of the nicest we've seen in Italy. Beautiful grounds and very sweet, accommodating staff. Location was perfect, with a fantastic view of Assisi. We loved that this location was so close to Assisi, as we did not want to hassle with the parking in the historical parts. If you have a car, this is the ideal location.
love love love this place!
best breakfast in Italy! Angela is wonderful and helped us with restaurant booking during our stay.
the rooms are the most beautiful and harmonic rooms ever, Angela has thought of every single detail in this location.
pool area nice and clean, perfect with the football and tennis court next to the pool.
we will definetely come back again!
Lovely! Oh, this was such a treat - we stayed in an old stone house in the city centre - a charming place with a small courtyard. But the inside of the house was very modern and fully equipped with a touch of luxury - the bed mattress and linen and some kitchen accessories were of exquisite quality. We loved it here so much, I would give it a 10+
The breakfast was delicous !! With great view
Our room si soooo nice and clean with big balcony! You can see the ASSISI…if there is a chance we will come back again..the best christmas to spend here..the hotel is like what in the picture..the staff are very helpfull and very friendly! Thank you for everything we have a great stay in your hotel
The breakfast was beyond expectations! we have travelled in Italy for many years, and usually have a simple breakfast....
here we had not only croissants and coffee, but a menu of eggs bacon breads fruit juices, served in a marvelous breakfast room. the owner visited with us and gave us valuable travel tips
We booked this hotel from another hotel last minute and it was the best decision we ever made. The host was incredible and couldn’t do enough for you. The view of Assisi was beautiful and the food cooked in their restaurant was the best meal we have had in Italy by far. You MUST stay here
Location was excellent! it is very near the Basilca if St Francis of Assisi! The hotel and room itself is a modern but very nice modern decor. Great shower, hair blower, view, bed, and access (elevator). Finally, to make it perfect, the Staff were so friendly and accommodating.
This is a great hotel. The staff is wonderful, the breakfast also great. As most hotels in Assisi, this hotel doesn’t have elevators. I would advise to pack lightly or carry little luggage to climb your steps. Other that that, it is centrally located.
The rooms were spotless and comfortable. The view from our room was spectacular. This was our second visit to Assisi and Hotel Ideale. This time we booked a room with a balcony and we were not disappointed. The breakfast was more than we could eat.
What a great hotel in the charming city of Assisi. The view from our room was breathtaking. The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff helped coordinate transportation for us to the train station on the morning we left.
Strategic location, Assisi within 15 minutes' walking distance, very nice service, we got an upgrade to a room with a view of Assisi, delicious breakfast, parking included in the price in the front of the hotel.
Breakfast was wonderful! They had a delightful spread of cheeses, meat, eggs, cakes and pastries. Service was super!
We had dinner on site that was the best we have had so far in Italy.
The location of Hotel Umbra perfect. We were able to walk to all the places we desired to visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This made our time in Assisi a blessing!
